The Tampa Tribune NEW ANCHORS By Christian M. Wade NEW PORT RICHEY - They drag along the ocean floor, pulling up clumps of sea grass. They get snagged in rocks or reefs, destroying the habitats of fish and other marine life. Once the sea floor is damaged by a boat anchor, it can take years to grow back. Mike Moran believes he's found a solution. The 55-year-old New Port Richey resident has designed a range of new boat anchors that easily dislodge from rocks and underwater debris and can be retrieved with minimal damage to the sea floor. His patented anchors are made from stainless steel and high tensile strength galvanized steel with a size and type for just about every boater. They are handcrafted, rustproof and quick-setting. "It's a little more expensive than the next guy," Moran said. "But it's two to three times stronger than the nearest competitors and comes out backward, which is key to the design." Each anchor has a pivoting sleeve that slides freely up the shank of the anchor, so it can be pulled out backward. The slide sleeve rotates and slides toward the head of the anchor. "It will dig deeper, it will dig quicker and it won't slide," he said. "You 're not going to get caught on the reefs or rocks, and you're not going to have to pull up heavy clumps of sea grass." click to read full article |
